In the UK, like much of the developed world, we are facing a senior citizen tsunami. In 2012, one in five of the population was over 65; by 2033, this figure is set to rocket to one in three.

This ageing of the UK’s population, intensified by longer life expectancy and a low birth rate, has big implications for long-term savers and the pensions industry alike. The challenge for investment managers is to deliver flexible, relevant investment solutions to meet savers’ needs in the face of increasing longevity.

I recently met with Professor Sarah Harper from the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing to discuss the big demographic challenges and opportunities facing societies around the globe as populations age, as well as how retirement habits might change in the future…
