Ami Shah joins from Wellington Management

Newton Investment Management (Newton), part of BNY Mellon Investment Management, today announced the appointment of Ami Shah as UK equity income portfolio manager. Ami joined Newton at the beginning of January and subject to certification, he will co-lead manage the Newton UK Equity Income strategy and the BNY Mellon UK Income fund.

Ami joins from Wellington Management, where he was a portfolio manager and research analyst. He was a member of the Wellington’s value team, which has responsibility for managing roughly $65bn for institutional clients across a broad range of income and value equity mandates. Ami brings with him a track record of alpha generation as a lead manager of diversified and sector-specific equity portfolios.

Ami’s appointment is a key hire for Newton as we grow our UK and global equity income business and capabilities. He has extensive knowledge of portfolio construction, risk management and combining fundamental research with quantitative analysis, all of which are excellent additions to the team. We are very pleased to welcome him to Newton.

Ami will manage the BNY Mellon UK Income fund alongside Jon Bell and Tim Lucas. They are supported by Newton’s wider global equity income hub and central research team, and form part of Newton’s 67-strong investment team.

Since the start of 2020, Newton has made 13 appointments to its investment team. Ami’s appointment follows recent hires of Paul Birchenough and Ian Smith from Axa to lead Newton’s global emerging market equity capabilities and Louise Kernohan from SLI to manage Newton’s UK equity strategies. Newton announced the appointment of Euan Munro, former Aviva CEO, as it’s CEO designate joining at the end of June.

Biography of Ami Shah
Portfolio manager, Equity Income team
Ami joined Newton in 2021, and is part of the management team of the Newton UK Equity Income strategy. Prior to joining Newton, he was a member of the Value team at Wellington Management, which had responsibility for managing c.$65bn of client assets across a variety of value and income strategies. Before joining Wellington, Ami was an equity research analyst in the European research team at T. Rowe Price. He originally trained as a medical doctor at UCL, and also holds an M.B.A. from London Business School. Outside work, Ami enjoys spending time with his young family, playing the piano, reading, and sport.
